Our Story

My name is Emma and I started Strawberry Sky Cakes with my husband, Jason, when we first moved to New Zealand in 2010. The name was inspired by my childhood on a strawberry farm in the heart of the Kent countryside in England and particularly to my dad, who now lives in the ‘sky’.

In 2010 I had a lot of training under my belt but no business experience and, looking back, it was an incredible leap of faith and there is no way I would say the journey was easy! BUT, by and large, I fulfilled so many of my career goals with the help of Jason and my portfolio now contains so many projects that I am extremely proud of – not least, a birthday cake for the King of Tonga in 2014, winning a competition at New Zealand Fashion Week in collaboration with Trelise Cooper and being involved with the 150th Wellington Anniversary celebrations in 2015.

Alongside all these big commissions, I adored creating birthday cakes and wedding cakes of all shapes and sizes and for people of all walks of life! Seeing someone’s vision of their dream cake come to life excited me every single time and, over the course of 8 years I created more than 1,000 customised cakes.

Along the journey, there were lots and lots of learning curves and lots of ‘ah ha’ moments and gradually, through the years my passions shifted much more towards teaching the art of cake decorating. To me there is no happier day than when students walk out of my studio, thrilled with what they have created and bursting with passion and inspiration for the art of cake decorating.

And so, in September 2018 we made the studio into a dedicated teaching space and I now happily share a wealth of knowledge with budding cake decorators far and wide. I am constantly inspired to create new classes and it’s a rare day when I don’t walk out of the studio bursting with enthusiasm and new ideas!

My classes are directed towards fun learning and my husband always comments about the peels of laughter he hears on teaching days. Classes are packed full of skills and provide a great, fun day out, whether you are wanting time away from the family to learn something new or time to relax from a stressful, high pressured job.

I love my work and I love meeting new people – I am patient, enthusiastic and slightly quirky……….I love to laugh – a lot! So, if a fun learning environment is for you, take a look at the cake decorating classes I have on offer here
